The Concourse of the Birds

October 9, 2011

The Concourse of the Birds

There is much to remark

in Habib Allah’s

ink, color and gold on paper

The exquisite choice of colors!

That background gold, a richness

that suffuses the entire vision.

The birds – the wonderful birds!

Where else but in an allegorical

painting from 16th C. Iran

would you find a rooster

consulting a hoopoe?

But, for me, his most remarkable

touch is the unruly tree

wandering desultorily

up out of the painting,

picture frame upper left,

on its way to Mecca!
