Parade Helmet

October 9, 2011

Parade Helmet

One gazes upon this helm

with such admiration for Filippo Nepoli –

who fabricated it from steel and gold and Greek myth –

and envy of the Milanese

lord who got to wear it jauntily every parade day

that, for the first time –

alone of hundreds of medieval weapons

and habiliments

of armored parade-wear –

this particular helmet

almost makes me wish I had been

a soldier in 1543.

Almost.
