Bronzino’s Portrait of a Young Man

October 7, 2011

Bronzino’s Portrait of a Young Man

He may be wondering why
Bronzino put a gargoyle finial
on the arm of the chair off his left wrist

Or he may be pondering how
to finish that Petrarchan
sonnet about Andrea

But I think what he’ll always wonder
after seeing his portrait for the first time
hanging in Piero’s studio

is why Bronzino did not-

when he could,
with but a few brush strokes –
correct his strabismus.
